HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Moscow Imperial Orphanage – architectural monument of the 18th-20th centuries.

Built by personal order of Ekaterina II.

Chief architect – Karl Blank, style – early classicism.

The Orphanage complex included the buildings of the Guardianship Council on Solyanka (architect Domenico Gilardi), Nikolaevskoye Orphan’s College, exit gates (sculptor Ivan Vitali) and Stores.

In the 1960s, the eastern block was completed (architect Iosif Loveiko).

The stone complex survived the fire of 1812 and the reconstruction of Moscow under Stalin’s reforms.
At different times, the building has accommodated an orphanage, hospital, Nikolaevskiy Institute for Officers’ Orphans, Institute of Paediatrics, a Military Academy and Strategic Rocket Troops Academy.
